How is rank and rent SEO different from normal local SEO?
The tactics are the same local SEO tactics. Three things change:
- You own the site, not the business. The domain should be generic ("boiseroofpros.com"), not a company name, so you can rent it to a different roofer later.
- There is no business at first. Until a renter signs, the site has no reviews, no office and no Google Business Profile, so the website itself has to do most of the ranking work.
- You build many sites. Whatever you do has to be repeatable, which is why structure and templates matter more than clever one-off tricks.
Keyword research for rank and rent
Local searches follow one pattern: service + city ("roof repair boise", "tree removal meridian"). Your keyword list is a grid: the services the trade offers, times the cities in the area.
- List 3–8 services people search for in the trade (repair, replacement, emergency, inspection).
- List the home city and the closest 3–8 cities by population.
- Check the map results for the main keyword. If the top three businesses have few reviews and weak websites, the market is beatable.
- Give the home page the main keyword ("roofing boise"), each service page its service, and each city page "trade + that city".
One page per keyword. Two pages chasing the same search split your chances.
Site structure that ranks
A rank and rent site is a small hub and spoke: the home page is the hub, service pages and city pages are the spokes. Every service page links to the city pages, every city page links back to the services, and the menu and footer link to all of them. Breadcrumbs show Google how they fit together.
Keep URLs short and readable: /roof-repair/ for a service, /service-areas/meridian/ for a city. Read the full guide to service area pages for how to make city pages that are not thin.
On-page SEO for each page
- Title: keyword first, then the brand or a benefit, about 50–60 characters ("Roof Repair in Boise, ID | Free Estimates").
- H1: the same keyword as the title, written for people.
- Meta description: 150–160 characters with the service, the city and a reason to call.
- First paragraph: say what you do and where, in plain words.
- Schema: LocalBusiness with the service area, Service on service pages, FAQPage where there is a real FAQ.
- Calls to action: a quote form near the top and a click-to-call number on every page.
Local content: the part most sites skip
Google's spam policies warn against doorway pages: many near-identical pages that only swap the city name. The fix is content that is true for that city and nowhere else: the permit office, the state license rule, typical prices adjusted to the state, the age of the local housing. That is what makes a city page worth ranking.
Local content: a real example
Here is what the permits and licensing part of a SetToRank kitchen remodeling page for Reno, Nevada says, taken straight from the research library:
Permits: Reno reviews new work against the 2024 building codes adopted on July 1, 2025. Permits are issued by the City of Reno Building Division, (775) 334-2063.
Licensing: Nevada requires a contractor license for work of $1,000 or more in labor and materials combined, and for any job that needs a building permit or involves plumbing, electrical, heating or air-conditioning work, whatever the price (NRS 624.031). Check any contractor with the Nevada State Contractors Board.
Every city page gets this kind of detail for its own city and state, which is what makes city pages useful to readers instead of copies with the city name swapped.
Google Business Profile, citations and links
Map results get most local clicks, and they come from Google Business Profiles. A profile has to belong to a real business, so the honest way is to set it up with the business that rents the site, using its name, address rules and phone number (Google's profile guidelines explain what is allowed).
Before a renter signs, build what you can: local directory listings for the site, links from local suppliers, sponsorships and chamber listings, and a few useful pages people link to, such as a cost calculator.
Tracking what the site brings in
- Google Search Console: add the domain on day one to see which searches show the site.
- A tracking phone number on every page, so you can prove calls to a renter.
- A lead log: every form lead saved and counted. SetToRank emails each lead to the renter and shows the count per site in your dashboard.
How long does rank and rent SEO take?
Most new local sites take a few months to rank, and longer in competitive cities or trades. Small cities and niches with weak competitors move fastest. That is why hosting cost matters: a site may sit live for months before it earns, so a low cost per site lets you run more sites while they rank.
Common rank and rent SEO mistakes
- Fifty city pages for a business that could never serve them all
- City pages that are copies with the name swapped
- Exact-match domains stuffed with keywords and no real content
- No phone number or form above the fold
- Building a site in a market where the top map results have hundreds of reviews
Rank and rent SEO FAQ
Does rank and rent SEO still work in 2026?
Yes, when the site is genuinely useful: one page per service and city, true local information, and a real business behind the leads. Thin copied city pages are what stopped working.
How many pages does a rank and rent site need?
Usually 12–20: a home page, one page per service (3–8), one per nearby city (up to 8), plus a cost guide, about, contact and legal pages.
Do I need backlinks for a rank and rent site?
A few local, relevant links help most: directories, local suppliers and organisations. In small markets, good on-page SEO and local content often rank before many links are needed.
Do I own a site built with SetToRank?
Yes. It is a normal WordPress site with Elementor pages and its own login. Host it with SetToRank on your own domain, or publish it to your own WordPress hosting.
Can I try SetToRank before paying?
Yes. Build your full site for free and look at every page. You only choose a plan when you want to publish it.
