How to rank and rent websites: pick a local service niche and a city with weak competition, build a site with a page for every service and nearby city, put it on its own domain, rank it with local SEO, send the leads to a local business and charge rent. The 8 steps

1. Pick a niche

Choose a trade where the business comes to the customer and one job is worth a lot or is urgent: roofing, tree service, remodeling, HVAC, plumbing, pest control. Compare job values for 20 trades in the best rank and rent niches.

2. Pick a city

Search "[service] [city]". If the top map results have few reviews and weak websites, the market is beatable. Mid-size cities and suburbs are often easier than big metros. Make sure there are enough businesses in the trade to rent to.

3. Plan the pages

Pick 3–8 services people search for and the closest 3–8 cities. Each gets its own page. Resist adding 30 cities: a tight area looks like a real local business, and that is what ranks.

4. Build the site

You need a home page, the service and city pages, a cost guide or calculator, about, contact and legal pages, with titles, H1s, meta descriptions, schema, menus and a quote form. By hand that is about 20–38 hours per site. With SetToRank you enter the niche, city, services and cities, and the whole WordPress site is built with researched local content. See what is automated.

5. Put it on a domain

Use a generic, brandable domain ("renokitchenco.com") that fits any business in the trade. Point it to your hosting, turn on SSL and add it to Google Search Console. On SetToRank you add the domain and it is connected with SSL automatically.

6. Rank it

Build local citations and a few relevant links, and set up a Google Business Profile with the business that rents the site. Read the full rank and rent SEO guide.

7. Route the leads

Send form leads to your own email until you have a renter, and use a tracking number for calls. See how to route leads to renters.

8. Rent it

Call local businesses with real leads in hand. Offer a few free, then agree on a monthly rent or a price per lead. When a renter leaves, switch the lead email and number to the next one.

Local content: a real example

Here is what the permits and licensing part of a SetToRank kitchen remodeling page for Reno, Nevada says, taken straight from the research library:

Permits: Reno reviews new work against the 2024 building codes adopted on July 1, 2025. Permits are issued by the City of Reno Building Division, (775) 334-2063.

Licensing: Nevada requires a contractor license for work of $1,000 or more in labor and materials combined, and for any job that needs a building permit or involves plumbing, electrical, heating or air-conditioning work, whatever the price (NRS 624.031). Check any contractor with the Nevada State Contractors Board.

Every city page gets this kind of detail for its own city and state, which is what makes city pages useful to readers instead of copies with the city name swapped.

What it costs to build a rank and rent site

On SetToRank a site costs $6.57–$15.67 to build depending on the plan, then $6–$10 a month to host after 14 free days, plus a domain at about $10–15 a year. See full pricing.
